Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Massage

Sometimes gravity and exercise aren’t enough to effectively move your lymph through your body. This can cause a range of problems, from sickness to lethargy. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique that uses light, rhythmic, and precise hand movements intended to encourage the natural drainage of lymph, by directing it to flow more efficiently.

Please be aware that if you have an underlying or the start of an illness such as a cold or sore throat, MLD massage can bring these out quicker. If you are ill or have been within the last 10 days we advise you to only book in once fully recovered.

What To Expect At Your First Appointment?

After a chat about your symptoms and any health concerns and how long they’ve been troubling you for (your case history) we will discuss specific areas that MLD can help you and the likely outcomes of the treatment. During this consultation we will discuss your medical history as although MLD feels gentle, it can significantly stimulate fluid circulation, including blood flow.

Once we’ve established the area(s) that are causing you issues, we will provide you with some treatment. MLD utilises the lymphatic system to detoxify the body, reduce and relieve swelling, and strengthen the immune system by enhancing lymph flow. It is a specialised massage technique that uses light, rhythmic, and precise hand movements intended to encourage the natural drainage of lymph, by directing it to flow more efficiently.

Your care plan will be bespoke and will depend on what is found during the initial consultation and how your body responds after each treatment. It is important to attend your follow up appointments. Firstly, we need to hear your feedback. Secondly, you may feel much better, but that doesn’t mean that your issue is completely resolved, and left semi-treated, it could creep back again.

The treatment and advice that we provide you with is always bespoke for you. We’re keen to get you better and keep you well. This is mutually beneficial, as let’s face it, you become our walking, talking adverts. Some patients require more support at certain points (for example during flare-ups of chronic conditions) so this will be discussed with you individually.

Important - Please read

Although Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) feels gentle, it can significantly stimulate fluid circulation, including blood flow. Consequently, it may not be appropriate for individuals with congestive heart failure, active cancer or any undiagnosed lump, serious circulatory problems, kidney failure, inflammation or infection of the lymphatic vessels, a risk of blood clotting, organ transplant or skin infections.

Where appropriate, confirmation from your oncologist or relevant specialist would need to be sought prior to going ahead with any MLD massage.

A. MLD is a specialised massage technique that uses light, rhythmic, and precise hand movements intended to encourage the natural drainage of lymph, by directing it to flow more efficiently. A specific sequence is followed to ensure target lymph node groups and regions of the body where lymph flow needs to be stimulated are all encompassed. The sequence and direction of strokes stimulates the lymphatic flow from congested areas. A 60-minute MLD massage can increase the speed of the lymphatic system by 100 times.

A. The lymphatic system is an extensive network of lymph vessels that helps keep bodily fluid balanced by draining excess fluid that accumulates in bodily tissue. Lymph is the fluid within the vessels that carries waste products away from the tissues and transports it back into the bloodstream and back towards the heart.
